A GUIDE TO SETTING UP INDICATOR CONDITION GUIDED HIV TESTING

This resource has been developed for lead clinicians or managers who are planning to introduce indicator condition guided HIV testing in their service. It has been specifically designed for services where patients present with hepatitis B or C, pneumonia or symptoms of infectious mononucleosis-like illness, but can be used for any (or all) indicator conditions.

This guide will take you through the operational points you should consider as you plan to start testing in your service. It will ask you to consider what will happen before an HIV test is offered, how testing will be done and how results will be managed.

The key relationships for teams introducing HIV testing in non-traditional settings will be with your local HIV or ID team. It will be important to agree who will be responsible for managing results and confirmatory testing. You might want to work with an HIV or ID specialist when going through this guide to agree a clear patient referral pathway for HIV testing in your service. This will both clarify responsibilities and explain the support and follow-up care these specialist teams can provide.
